My best friend lives out there and I don't know how she does it. She isn't some wacky far left loon either. We're both from the northeast originally, i moved to the south and she moved there. I will take my red state over either one of those regions any day!
Your best friend has my deepest sympathy. San Francisco is a lovely place from everything I have heard, but I wouldn't live there on a bet.
