Ticketed For Parking In Your Driveway

One more reason to be glad you do not live in DC, although you can bet this idea will spread eventually.

If you own a home in DC, and you park your car in your driveway, far enough in the driveway to not be blocking the sidewalk, you can be ticketed by the police.

That’s right. A ticket for parking your car in your driveway. Even if it’s not blocking the sidewalk. The car completely on your property.

According to the way the law is written, all land on your property from the front of your home to the street is considered public space. It’s your responsibility to maintain it, and if someone were to get hurt there, you would be liable. But, for ticketing purposes, it belongs to the city.

You can pay the tickets each time you get them, or you can lease the land back from the city, at a cost of thousands of dollars per year.

You gotta love politicians and the imaginative ways they come up with raising taxes.
